Ethel Barrymore (born August 15, 1879 – died June 18, 1959) was an Oscar-winning actress and a member of the famous Barrymore family. She was recognized in New York City as a charming and charismatic performer and as a prominent Broadway actress. Her Broadway debut came in 1901 in a play titled *Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines*. She portrayed Nora in Ibsen’s *A Doll’s House* (1905) and played a passionate Juliet in Shakespeare’s *Romeo and Juliet* (1922). Winston Churchill proposed to her, but she turned him down. Ethel did, however, marry Russel Griswold Colt on March 14, 1909; they divorced in 1923. As a devout Catholic, she could not remarry within the Church. Although she became involved with other men later in life, she never married again. She had three children with Colt, including Ethel Barrymore Miglietta, who appeared on Broadway in Stephen Sondheim’s *Follies*. Ethel’s sons, Samuel and John Drew Colt, also pursued careers in acting. Ethel passed away from cardiovascular complications in 1959 at her home in Hollywood, California, two months shy of her 80th birthday. She was laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles.
